Nothing says “fall” like a porch full of pumpkins—stacked by the door, tucked into planters, or just hanging out next to a cozy chair. But if you’ve ever had one turn to mush halfway through October, you know the struggle is real.

At Wonder & Whimsy Studio, we want your fall décor to last as long as your love for sweater weather. So we’re sharing a few of our favorite tips to help your porch pumpkins stay fresh, festive, and photo-ready all season long.

Why It’s Worth Taking the Extra Step

Pumpkins are gorgeous, but they’re also, well… produce. Left to their own devices, they’ll start to rot, get moldy, or become a squirrel’s snack. A little TLC makes a big difference. With the right prep, your pumpkins can:

  • Look great for weeks (yes, even the real ones!)

  • Stay firm and mold-free

  • Keep your porch feeling cozy, clean, and curated

  • Save you from having to toss and replace them mid-season

Step 1: Pick the Right Pumpkins

Start with pumpkins that are in good shape:

  • No soft spots or dents

  • Sturdy stem still attached

  • Feels heavy for its size (that means it’s fresh)

  • Bonus points for heirloom varieties—they last longer and look extra cute

Step 2: Give Them a Quick Bath

Yup, your pumpkins need a bath. Here’s how we do it:

  1. Mix 1 part bleach with 10 parts water in a sink or bucket

  2. Soak the pumpkins for about 10 minutes

  3. Use a soft cloth to wipe away any dirt

  4. Let them dry completely

This helps kill off mold and bacteria before they even have a chance to start causing trouble.

Step 3: Seal It In

Once your pumpkins are clean and dry, seal ‘em up:

  • Spray with a clear matte sealer (you can find one at any craft store)

  • Or rub a little petroleum jelly on the outside to keep moisture in

  • Make sure they’re not sitting on damp ground—use a crate, mat, or even a layer of straw

Bonus: It makes them look extra vibrant and polished.

Step 4: Keep an Eye on the Weather

If temps are dropping below freezing at night, bring your pumpkins in or tuck them somewhere sheltered. And if it’s still blazing hot during the day? A little afternoon shade goes a long way.
